Recording as an educational tool in kindergarten

Recording in kindergarten

The evolution of technology today allows us to easily make an audio recording in quite good quality. This can be done either by using a simple electronic device (eg tablet) with appropriate software, or with a more complex installation that includes an external microphone, as shown in the photos from a kindergarten I worked in.

But what is the reason to record in kindergarten and what can we record?

Starting to answer the second part of the question, we can record the children individually or in groups when they sing, tell stories, recite poems, imitate, pronounce words, reproduce rhymes, produce various sounds, etc.

Recording is a very important tool for both children and the teacher, while its value in the educational process could be summarized as follows:

  • It is a means of monitoring and recording the language progress of children, but also a means of feedback for the children themselves (eg children listen to what they have recorded, realize their weaknesses and try to improve)
  • It facilitates the child to acquire his language fluently and to express himself more freely, in the form of a game, through the cycle: recording - listening - re-recording
  • It helps to improve the child's ability to sing, especially when it comes to recording a song with headphones, where he should sing on specific melodic and rhythmic elements, such as karaoke. In this case the child gradually develops a high degree of concentration in what he hears, while at the same time he learns to perceive and follow the rhythm, to distinguish sound variations, to memorize and sings lyrics (elements that contribute to his language development child)
  • It is a means of entertainment and play (from my experience, children enjoy participating in recordings)
  • A memory folder with audio files is created, which can be shared with the child at the end of the school year
